Sporting successes are just as important as academic achievement here – that's why we offer such a varied programme and have dedicated staff who focus on the sport we offer.
Visitors to Dame Bradbury’s are often surprised to find behind the traditional facade of our school a generous provision for sporting activities, including our own sports field, used for sport all year round and for playtime in the summer months. We also have our own multi-use sports hall, the Rainey Hall, where a wide range of sports can be played including netball, basketball, cricket, and badminton. It is also used to host events for our local sports partnership (USSP), for the weekly Big Gym and Little Gym sessions enjoyed by our younger pupils, and for our weekly toddler group for local families to enjoy. In addition to this we have our own astro turf and two full-sized courts for netball and tennis. Pupils from Year 2 to Year 5 are driven by minibus to their swimming lessons at the local Lord Butler Leisure Centre.
Physical activity and an enjoyment of being outdoors are important facets of our education for all our pupils. Each year pupils develop and hone their skills following a timetable that includes all the school favourites. As well as the generous provision within curriculum time, we try to ensure that we always offer a good range of sports clubs for the children to choose from. There's an emphasis on sportsmanship and fair play, as well as teamwork and hand-to-eye co-ordination. It's a balance between stretching the best athletes and being inclusive, so everyone takes a turn at being captain.
For most sports, there are house competitions and the House Sports Cup is presented to the winning house on sports day. There are also house cups for individual sports, such as the house netball trophy.
