Dear parents

Throughout the term the children have been fortunate to hear the many different ways that people, technology, and animals help others.  

At Madingley the Kindergarten class heard how a dentist helps us to keep our teeth healthy, and in Year 2 the children discovered the technology behind wireless communication.  

In the City the Year 1 class learnt about the bravery and quick thinking of paramedics and the equipment Doctors use.

Thank you to all the parents and visitors that have been able to share these experiences with our classes - the children have certainly been inspired by what they have seen and heard.

Presenting and performing in front of an audience has been another theme for the term.  Our Reception classes shared their first Class Assembly with the school and their parents.  They took turns to speak confidently to the audience and delighted everyone with an iMovie that captured their favourite moments from the year so far.  In Year 1 and 2 the children performed in a gymnastics display: after carefully rehearsing movements that link together in a phrase, and showing how they use the different pieces of equipment, the children excelled in demonstrating body control.  We look forward to welcoming parents to our performances in other areas of learning in the Summer Term.

At the end of term our youngest children have been taking the opportunity to put all of their learning into practice.  After spending the past weeks hearing how people and animals can provide help to others, the children decided it was their turn to contribute and help other people.  They produced a promotional video advertising a charity bike-wash and packed their buckets, sponges and cloths and travelled to the Senior School and Junior School for a day of bike washing.  The children enthusiastically cleaned the bikes with the aim of collecting money to sponsor a guide dog puppy. Some members of staff were so impressed with the children’s bike cleaning abilities that they doubled their contribution.

The oldest children in the Pre-prep have also been involved in a community project this term, the City Year 2 class have regularly visited the local care home collaborating with the residents to grow seeds.  The children researched what the residents’ favourite plants were and then helped the residents care for the seeds before finally spending time doing observational drawings alongside the residents. The children shared their energy and enthusiasm with the residents and the residents inspired the children with their drawing skills.

A topic that began with the children discovering all the different ways that people help them in their daily lives has ended with the children having the chance to feel that they too can be someone that helps others.
